West Nile Virus/EEE Update

WNV Update: Attached you will find the press release issued by New York State on August 30, 2000 regarding the identification of WNV disease from a horse on Staten Island. This represents the first equine case in 2000. Recommendations for minimizing the incidence of WNV infection in horses have not changed as a result of this case.

EEE Update: In addition to the affected horse in Gloucester County you were alerted to recently, the Animal Health Lab has detected positive EEE antibodies in sentinel chickens in the following counties: Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Mercer, Monmouth and Salem. Positive mosquito pools have been detected in Burlington and Camden counties. Horse owners should be advised to vaccinate their horses for EEE.

Please keep in mind that encephalitis is a reportable disease in New Jersey. The Division of Animal Health is available to assist you in any way possible. When submitting samples for suspect cases, paired serum samples are optimal, but are not always available. Always submit acute serum immediately-don't wait! In case of death, submission of the brain is required for confirmatory lab testing.
