Electricity is an invisible form of energy created by activity between atoms, the tiny materials that are the building blocks of the entire universe. Even your body is made of atoms.

Electricity is one of those things we all take for granted...until there’s a power outage. Because it’s invisible to us we often forget about its power. Here are some tips to keep your family safe.

NEVER touch any power line, even if you think it’s safe. Please report downed power lines immediately to your local utility and call us at (973)648-3875.

Look up! Be careful not to touch overhead power lines with ladders, long-handled equipment, television antennas or other items.

Take care when climbing in trees. Always look for power lines before climbing. Once in the tree it may be difficult to spot lines as they tend to blend in with the colors of the tree.

Never touch broken electric cords or cords with wires showing.
Do not pull on cords to unplug them from the wall-hold onto the plug and then pull them out.
Never fly kites or balloons near power lines- electricity can travel down the strings.
Do not touch anything electrical while you are wet or standing in water.

1. At home, hold a ribbon up to the edges of windows and doors. If it blows, you've found a leak. Tell your parents.
2. When you leave the room, turn off the light.
3. Open and close the refrigerator door quickly when choosing a snack.
4. Turn off lights, televisions, or other energy users when you are not using them.
5. If you know of a light that everyone forgets to turn off, make a sticker or a sign to hang next to the switch that says "Lights Out" or "Don't Forget."
   Choose an energy monitor for your classroom every week who will make sure energy is being used properly.
