The newly appointed, 15-member task force is expected to issue a report by the end of this year that includes recommendations regarding the process of conducting a constitutional convention and identifies issues the convention should consider.
“We are moving forward in our efforts to repair and reconstruct the faulty foundation on which New Jersey’s property tax system rests,” said McGreevey. “Holding a convention takes the property tax debate out of Trenton and puts it in the hands of voters – where it belongs.”
The Governor in July signed legislation establishing the Property Tax Convention Task Force as part of his three-pronged FAIR (Fair and Immediate Relief) plan. He also signed separate bills to freeze government spending and to provide immediate property tax relief to nearly two million senior citizens and middle class families.
The task force will meet on September 21 at 2 p.m. in Winants Hall at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. The Governor will deliver opening remarks. The initial meeting is for organizational purposes. The public will have an opportunity to provide input during separate hearings to be held throughout the state during the upcoming months.
