TRENTON, N.J.—In a press conference held today at the Joyce McDade Administration Building, Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes joined with representatives from Sovereign Bank Arena and the MAAC to announce the NCAA’s decision to bring the Women’s Division I Basketball Championship back to Mercer County for Spring 2009 and 2010.

March 2006 brought Mercer County its first-ever NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship tournament, with Rounds 1 and 2 of the Division I finals taking place at Sovereign Bank Arena.  According to Hughes, basketball enthusiasts traveled from far and wide to support their favorite teams, bringing high levels of tourism and business to bustling downtown Trenton for the weeks surrounding the tournament.  Adding to the excitement was the selection of Rutgers University to play in the tournament; Scarlet Knights fans showed up in droves, sporting scarlet and black.

Hughes expressed great enthusiasm for the prospect of another NCAA tournament in Mercer County.  “The NCAA’s selection of Mercer County and our Capital City of Trenton to again host the Women’s Division 1 Basketball Championship validates the Capital County as a viable and significant sports venue,” enthused the County Executive.  “I am extremely proud that the Sovereign Bank Arena continues to showcase quality and enjoyable events right here in our backyard.”
