TRENTON, N.J. -Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes and N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner David Socolow formally opened the new, consolidated Mercer County One-Stop Career Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony today in front of dozens of supporters.
The new center, located at 26 Yard Avenue within the offices of the N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development, is now a combined State and County operation. It provides a wealth of career services for both job seekers and employers, including skills assessment, job training, and job placement.
"It used to be that a person would get a job and 30 years later would retire with benefits and a pension," Hughes told the audience of approximately 50 supporters. "That just doesn't happen anymore. People are constantly in search of new training, new chances, and new career opportunities, and we provide all that here at this one great location."
The mission of the One-Stop Center is to provide targeted work search and quality training for residents seeking employment and to help local business grow by enhancing the pool of qualified candidates for jobs.
For instance, for individuals seeking employment, the One-Stop Center offers fax, phone, and Internet service, employment counseling, vocational training, veterans' services, resume assistance, and a host of other resources. Services for businesses and employers include job fairs, applicant screenings, labor market data, and "On the Job Training," among others.
Commissioner Socolow said he and his staff worked "tirelessly" in partnership with the County Office of Economic Opportunity to relocate the Mercer County One-Stop Center from its former location at 650 South Broad Street.
He added the State Department of Labor was halfway toward achieving the goal set by Governor Jon Corzine to consolidate all 18 County One-Stop Centers to maximize efficiency.
"We are so proud today to celebrate the opening of this facility right here in the state capital," Socolow said. "Our goal is to provide employment services in a cost-effective and customer-friendly way, and to help businesses grow and develop."
Through the One-Stop Center, Mercer County helped place more than 1,000 individuals in jobs last fiscal year, and the Center processed more than 18,000 customers.
