LAWRENCE, N.J.—The Mercer County Library System is pleased to announce that the Library System has been awarded a grant to participate in a pilot program that offers online computer classes and tutorials on library services.

The grant, awarded by the Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperative (CJRLC), will provide an online virtual classroom through iLinc software that allows patrons to attend classes at home or work through the Internet.

Initial class offerings will include online instruction on using Microsoft Office 2007 products such as Excel and Word, navigating the library catalog, and accessing library databases.  Participants will be able to make suggestions on future class offerings.  Class times and instructions on how to join will be posted on the library’s website at www.mcl.org and in the computer class calendar available at each branch.  The first class is tentatively set for July 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.

In addition to the live online classes, mini-tips and tutorials will be archived for on-demand playback on the library website.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to participate in this virtual pilot program,” said County Executive Brian Hughes. “Mercer County Library System has consistently embraced new technology in an endeavor to assist our patrons. Virtual computer classes will also allow us to reach out to those that may not be able to visit our facilities.”

A DSL or cable connection is suggested and students will need to download a small application to run the interactive portion of the class.  Participants can ask questions via online chat or optional audio, which requires a microphone or headset.  Other features of the iLinc program allow the instructor to share PowerPoint presentations, course handouts, an interactive whiteboard, and applications.  These features allow students to participate in the class without having to have the programs installed on their computer.   For additional information regarding the upcoming classes, please visit the library’s website, www.mcl.org.
