TITUSVILLE, N.J. — Make-up days have been added to the calendar at Howell Farm’s 2009 “Schoolhouse Maze” because of a spate of rainy weekends. The extended calendar will give “students” more time to graduate according to the maze’s operators, who note that conditions in their cornfield classroom remain excellent…thanks, ironically, to all the rain.

Hours of operation are noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 and noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. The Maze also will be Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 8, noon to 4 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 13, 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 14, noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 15, noon to 4 p.m.  During a special program on Nov. 7, maze goers will be treated to wildlife presentations by the Mercer County Wildlife Center, which will receive corn harvested from the maze to feed orphaned and injured wildlife.  Special presentations that day are at noon and 2 p.m. Admission is $8 for ages 13 and older; $6 for children ages 5-12 and free for children 4 and under.

Depicting an old-fashioned schoolhouse, the maze’s 2 ½ mile pathway winds through 4 acres of corn featuring a Maze master’s Tower and bridge, a 30-speaker music system and numerous games played with flags, clues, hidden map pieces and prizes. In keeping with the theme, maze-goers are challenged to pass corn quizzes, collect kernels of knowledge and, in the end, graduate Corn Laude in agriculture, history and – for those taking their maze classes at night – navigation by moon and stars.

The maze also features a children’s hay bale maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, gift shop and food service.  In addition to trying out the maze, visitors can head to the nearby historic farm to visit the animals, choose pumpkins and visit the refurbished barn and education center.

Howell Living History Farm is a facility of the Mercer County Park Commission.  It is located on Valley Road, just off Rt. 29 two miles south of Lambertville, NJ.  The Schoolhouse Maze is located on Valley Road, 1 mile west of the farm’s historic site.
