Sept-11-11 Hughes, residents to dedicate new Sept.11th Memorial on 10th Anniversary
MEDIA CONTACT: Julie Willmot
TRENTON, N.J. - Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes will be joined by county residents, first responders from around the area, and other local officials in a solemn ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11th, 2011 in Mercer County Park to dedicate the new September 11th Memorial that has been constructed there.
The ceremony is open to the public. It will include performances of the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” by One Voice, comprised of members of the Trenton Children’s Chorus and conducted by Patricia Thel of the Westminster Conservatory Cantus. Hughes will then deliver brief remarks before dedicating the memorial with a moment of silence. A performance of Amazing Grace will close the ceremony.
Earlier this year, Mercer County obtained a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center site in New York after the attacks on September 11, 2001. The 10-foot, 2,108-pound section of I-beam steel is now the centerpiece of a new memorial site near the marina in Mercer County Park that will be dedicated to honor the victims and first responders who perished in the attacks. The memorial was designed by architect Michael Sullivan of Clark Caton Hintz.
The Mercer County September 11 Memorial will be a site at which residents from around the area and visitors can reflect on those who lost their lives and the emotions of that day, and a place where future generations can honor the victims.
The section of steel was one of thousands of artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center site and catalogued by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, and the Port Authority then commenced a program to give the artifacts to local communities for use in 9/11 memorials.
