- Couples must produce a valid marriage/civil union license for the County Clerk to perform a marriage/civil union ceremony.
- Dates must be reserved in advance. Generally, couples must apply for a marriage license from the municipality in which the bride resides. However, if the bride is not a resident of New Jersey, then application is made in the town in which the groom resides. If neither the bride or the groom resides in New Jersey, application is made in the town in which the marriage ceremony will take place.
- For civil union ceremonies, a civil union license must be obtained from the municipality where either partner resides or if neither partner resides in NJ, from the town in which the marriage ceremony will take place.
