Problem solving and decision making center on identifying and applying skills needed to solve problems and make delicate decisions that allow work teams to go from dysfunctional to functional.  Problem solving and decision making are crucial to effective leadership. 

In this course participants will learn the value in experiencing problems and effective steps in problem solving processes.  Participants will also gain knowledge of and apply various individual and group decision making techniques.  Through real life work scenarios, group discussions and activities, participants will be encouraged to think creatively on how to identify root causes and best approaches for solving traditional and contemporary problems brought on by an ever changing, complex public service environment. 

Learning Objectives include:

  • Define the key aspects of problem solving and decision making by explaining the relationship between the two terms
  • Differentiate between routine and non-routine problems that occur in the workplace
  • Identify common barriers to problem solving
  • List the steps of an effective problem solving process model
  • Plan next courses of action
  • Identify current decision making strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify individual differences in decision making
  • Identify group decision making techniques
  • List the steps in effective decision making
