Course Goal: The Support Specialist Program (SSP) strives to empower the participant through educational activities to become a more efficient, effective and ethical organizational team member and leader.

Course Description

Support Specialist Program is a comprehensive training program which will assist administrative support personnel in understanding his/her role and function as a team member of a working unit within state and local government. The program emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the expanding role of the Support Specialist in an ever-changing organization. Course content is organized in a progressively intensive manner covering three major themes: Understanding Self and Work Environment, Strengthening Communication Skills, and Working Effectively with Others.

Participants are exposed to various learning situations in the classroom, supported by practice exercises which apply the curriculum concepts. The desired outcome is not only to impart information, but also to allow for the practical application of the theories. SSP is not an "end all"; there is no closure to SSP.  It is hoped that individuals completing the program will be inspired to continue to build their careers through further education and development through both classroom and online learning opportunities.  A Road Map to learning is included in the SSP curriculum which gives participants' access to the state's electronic Learning Management System (LMS) and a subscription to unlimited access to a complete library of over 2,000 Skillsoft online courses to reinforce program principals.

SSP consists of 12 units (72 hours of classroom instruction) delivered one day a week, for four weeks with a two week break following each themed Levels, for a  total of 12 training days over the span of 16 weeks. Course completion requirements include planned and impromptu class presentations, homework, home reading assignments, and attendance of at least eleven of the twelve units.  Makeup sessions can be arranged with the CSC Office of Training when a student misses a class due to illness or a competing commitment. Participants are encouraged to attend all 12 units for maximum course benefit.
