DEFINITION
Under direction of a Captain of the Police Department has charge of a police
platoon or performs specialized supervisory police duties; does related work as required.
 
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Gives suitable police assignments and instructions to Sergeants and Police Officers.
Provides them with needed advice and assistance when difficult problems of maneuvers arise.
Checks their work to see that proper procedures are followed, reasonable standards of workmanship, conduct and output are maintained.
That desired police objectives are achieved.
Directs criminal and non-criminal investigations and sees that appropriate police action is taken.
Takes classified records and files fingerprints.
When on desk duty, keeps a desk blotter, arrest book and a property book.
When necessary, apprehends, warns or takes into custody violators of the law.
Sees that needed police protection is provided when large sums of money are in transit, when there are fires, outbreaks and other conditions which might result in disorder and when large numbers of people congregate for ~~y reason .
Makes thorough investigation.
Prepares suitable reports and keeps needed records and files.
 
 
REQUIREMENTS:
Education 
Graduation from High School or Vocational High School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.

Experience
Two years of supervisory police experience involving the providing of assistance and protection for persons, the safeguarding of property, the observance of the law and the apprehension of law breakers.

License 
Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license.

Knowledge
Wide knowledge of the laws and ordinances which are significant from the police point of view.
Of the problems and procedures involved in working out the internal organization and formulating rules and regulations for the Police Department.
Of the methods likely to be useful in providing citizens and others with proper police information, service and protection.
Of the devices useful in getting people, individually and in groups, to conform to1egal and social requirements of the types of police communication that are useful and feasible in the Police Department.
Of the methods of detecting, apprehending, placing charges against, safeguarding and prosecuting lawbreakers.
Of providing police protection at places and times when needed.
Of the measures likely to be useful in dealing with juveniles in such a manner as to enlist their support and minimize the types of behavior that lead to juvenile delinquency.
Ability
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Ability to analyze and interpret laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, standards and procedures, apply them to specific situations and cases.
To organize the local police work in such a manner as to provide needed services and protection.
To formulate police rules and regulations.
To obtain and make effective use of needed funds, personnel equipment and quarters.
To give suitable assignments and instructions to members of the Police Department, provide them with needed advice and assistance when difficult and. unusual problems arise and check their work to see that proper procedures are followed.
That reasonable standards of workmanship, conduct and output are maintained and that desired police objectives are achieved.
To take the lead in establishing and maintaining helpful and cooperative relationships with individuals and groups interested in the maintenance of law and order.
To see that members of the force treat citizens and others with uniform courtesy and consideration and provide them with proper information and police services.
To provide the Police Officers with direction and assistance necessary to assure the orderly handling of traffic.
To supervise the investigation and disposition of complaints .
To direct police activities necessary in keeping good order at places where people assemble in large numbers.
To see that children are provided with the assistance and protection they need.
To take and maintain a firm and correct stand when controversies and differences of Opinion arise .
To prepare and supervise the preparation of clear, sound, accurate and informative reports.
To direct the establishment and maintenance of needed police records and files.
Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others.
