A newly signed law (P.L. 2017, chapter 15) may assist homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy who continue to be adversely impacted by the storm’s destruction.  You may be eligible for assistance if you:

1. Have an outstanding mortgage obligation on the Sandy-impacted primary home;

2. Have construction or elevation work that remains to be done on the applicant’s primary residence, which is the result of damage sustained in Superstorm Sandy; and

3. Qualify as a Sandy-impacted homeowner (received FEMA rental assistance or were approved for assistance from the RREM or LMI programs).

If DCA determines you are eligible, you should be aware that forbearance will not reduce the amount of your mortgage. Rather, it will provide a period of time during which your mortgage payments will be suspended. At the conclusion of the forbearance period, you must return to making your mortgage payments. It should be noted that during the forbearance period you must continue to pay property taxes and insurance on your home, as well as maintain your property.
