Trauma, Brain and Realtionship: Helping Children Heal (video)

This video shows various national leaders on trauma and children(Bruce Perry MD PhD, Dan Siegel MD etc.) the absolute importance of healthy relationships to create children that are emotionally reactive and hypersensitive to stress. It discusses certain behavioral manifestations such as anger and rage that are triggered by being exposed to such high levels of uncertainty and helplessness in their primary caregiver relationship. The video also discusses the high level of trauma histories in parents of children with trauma in their own developmental histories and the need for the parent to understand their own history. Lastly, the video should be watched to understand the necessary components of a healthy relationship between primary care giver and child that shows an attunement to the inner state that integrates both parties in the relational milieu. At the 19:03 mark Dan Siegel states how a child in a home with insecure attachments can still be successful later in life if they just have one adult that has a secure attachment to them. That person can be a day care worker, teacher or most importantly a DCF worker.

Nadine Burke Harris, The ACE Study: How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime
 (video)

Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on.

Bruce Perry MD PhD, The SevenSlide Series: The Human Brain (video)

This video is a brief introduction to core concepts regarding brain structure and function that provides the basis for developmentally sensitive and trauma-informed caregiving, education and therapy. The learner will begin to conceptualize the structure of the brain in a vertical paradigm that operates in a sequential and hierarchal way dependent on both use and state. It is the first video of a three part series.
