Joseph E. Krakora
Joseph E. Krakora was sworn in as the Public Defender for the State of New Jersey on
June 28, 2011. Under his leadership, the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender is
building a reputation as one of the top offices in the country. The NJOPD attracts
extremely talented young lawyers committed to careers in public service. It offers
first class training opportunities and provides excellent investigative and clerical
support for its attorneys. Joe is a graduate of Princeton University and Cornell
University Law School and has been a criminal defense attorney since 1984. He is
widely recognized as one of the top criminal trial attorneys in New Jersey. He has
been a Public Defender for almost 25 years serving in staff and managerial positions.
Until the abolition of the death penalty in 2007, he was the Director of Capital
Litigation and generally acknowledged as the top capital litigator in the agency.
For many years, he specialized in the defense of homicide cases and he has won a number
of high profile cases over the years including four that were featured in front page
New Jersey Law Journal articles. He has also been a respected and popular lecturer on
topics including the death penalty, jury selection, cross-examination of expert witnesses,
and the shaken baby syndrome.
