Power Generation - Alternative Fuel Systems

OSARIT is leading a coordinated effort with NJDEP regulatory programs and other NJ State agencies to develop a technical guidance document that defines the technical and regulatory requirements for companies claiming to achieve air pollutants emissions below the regulatory standards from the construction and operation of systems that manufacture alternative fuels from biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) feedstock for use in power generation devices. The document will outline the required scientific and technical data that will be required for verifying the appropriate performance claims of the technologies.

Emerging biochemical and thermochemical processes that convert biomass and MSW feedstock directly into useable liquid and gaseous alternative fuels seem promising. Also, there are processes that convert the feedstock into solid fuels, which can be utilized in anaerobic digestion and gasification processes for conversion into liquid and gaseous fuels. However, to obtain NJDEP permits, companies that manufacture alternative fuels must demonstrate, through independent third party verification, that these processes conform to the applicable regulatory standards.
