Power Generation - Small Capacity Generators

The NJDEP’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:27-8.2(f)1 provide the opportunity for micro turbine or reciprocating engine power generation systems having a capacity less than 500 kW and determined to be insignificant sources of emissions to be used in New Jersey without requiring air operating permits. To demonstrate this, an independent third party verification of the performance claims of the system must be done by an entity having a performance partnership agreement with NJDEP. Currently, such an agreement between the NJDEP and the New Jersey Corporation of Advanced Technology (NJCAT) exists in accordance with the Energy and Environmental Technology Verification (EETV) Act at N.J.S.A. 13:1D.

OSARIT facilitates the verification of these devices by collaborating with NJCAT, DAQ and the applicants to adopt/develop the appropriate protocols for testing the devices and obtaining the required performance data. Upon successful completion of the verification process and submittal of acceptable reports to the NJDEP by NJCAT, OSARIT will work with DAQ to issue the appropriate approvals confirming that the respective power generation devices do not require air permits for operation in New Jersey.
