Barnegat Bay Blitz
ISLAND HEIGHTS BOROUGH
Team Captain: Karen Hershey
May 9, 2012 - Regardless of the weather, you couldn't dampen the spirits of the volunteers who participated in the Island Heights May Blitz! Twenty enthusiastic volunteers from DEP, Island Heights (IH) and other surrounding towns put on their rain gear and participated in the event.
The morning started off with coffee, donuts and lovely music from DEP employee Janine MacGregor's daughter, Jesse. She brought her guitar and played "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" -a fitting song for the occasion!
Our IH Blitz volunteers were escorted by two friendly gentlemen from the IH Public Works Department. They accompanied the volunteers, providing assistance with tools and bag collection. We deployed teams to five IH locations and collected 16 bags in all. Some ventured out onto the Bay and into Dillons Creek via kayak to collect debris. We recovered a variety of items including cigarette butts, condoms, bottles and cans of all shapes and sizes, bottle caps and banana peels. Some of the larger items included headphones, a kayak seat and underwear. It was a productive day and despite the weather, everyone had a good time!
October 19, 2011 Blitz Recap:
What a great day we had on October 19! The day started out with wonderful musical entertainment from the Top Hats-Ocean County's premiere string band complete with authentic mummer dancing. From there 10 brave souls ventured into the rain and wind and embarked on a Borough-wide clean up. We tackled three locations. The third location at Long Point proved to have the most garbage. We collected a variety of debris and plenty of it! All in all, it was a productive and eventful day, one that many of us will remember for a long time. One nice outcome which none of could have anticipated was the camaraderie that we all felt as we undertook the clean up. Some folks had never met before and yet we all worked together in the rain in good spirits and with laughter to get the job done!
So a heartfelt THANK YOU to the volunteers who participated in the Barnegat Bay Blitz Clean-Up. BIG thanks also go to those who provided support for the event, including Island Heights Mayor Jim Biggs, Director of Public Works John Brodbeck, Senior Liaison Betsy Hyle and Borough assistant April Elley who helped get the word out. See you next year!
