Phase Two: Moving Science into Action

Barnegat Bay Blitz

The net was significant. I would estimate it weighed between 800 and 1,000 lbs, and that was after we were able to get it out of the sand. We had to break it down into three intact pieces, just to get it off the beach and into the boat. We transported the net by boat to the local commercial fishing dock where we expect it will be put back into productive use, rather than landfilled as trash.

October 19, 2011 Blitz Recap:

Point Pleasant Beach has been very proactive in stewarding their environment. Multiple groups within the town were set to participate in the Barnegat Bay Blitz as well as the Beach Clean-Up the same weekend. Jenkinson's Aquarium sent a small contingent of volunteers to clean-up The Lake of The Lilies. The 5 collected about 20 bags worth of debris and also a door. They plan to conduct regular clean-ups around town in the future.

The High School's Environmental Science Teacher had modified the curriculum slightly in anticipation of the event in order to stress concepts related to watershed and storm water pollution. Unfortunately they were hampered by the foul-weather but both groups were able to take part in the Beach Clean-Up that Saturday. We congratulate the School District and those private businesses which have taken active roles in maintaining the health of the Bay and the community!
