May 9, 2012: Southern Regional Middle School's 7th grade academic SURF and STORM teams again participated in the NJ Department of Environmental Protection's Barnegat Bay Blitz Day on May 9th. This is a statewide initiative to clean up Barnegat Bay and the surrounding areas.

Surf City Councilman, Peter Hartney, initiated the partnership with Southern Regional Middle School to clean up street ends that run into the bay in Surf City. Middle School students traveled to Surf City and worked with the Councilman and members of the NJ DEP and the ReClam The Bay organization at five different bay areas.

Following the cleanup, students traveled to the Surf City Fire House for an assembly about conservation of the Bay. Councilman Hartney told the students about the efforts to clean the Watershed. Members of the ReClam the Bay organization explained that their goal is to bring the clam population back into the bay to help keep the water clean.
