Water Classifications (Shellfish Harvest Classifications): Classification of New Jersey's coastal waters for shellfish harvesting is displayed on a series of maps.  These classifications are based on extensive water quality monitoring and pollution source surveys that are performed by the bureau.

Water Quality (Coastal Data): The bureau also performs regular testing of the basic water chemistry of the coastal waters.  Information such as salinity, oxygen levels and nutrient levels in the coastal waters can be accessed through a series of maps.

Nonpoint Monitoring (Source Pollution Monitoring): Since 1994, the bureau has been performing intensive monitoring in a number of locations along the New Jersey coast in order to address the impact of nonpoint source pollution on coastal water quality.  Nonpoint source pollution is contaminants that enter our streams, lakes, rivers, bays and oceans from sources such as storm water runoff, wildlife and overboard discharges from boats.  The bureau is developing methods to monitor these pollutants and to track down the sources of pollutants so that their impact can be reduced or eliminated.

Technical Support: Monitoring coastal water quality involves the use of sensitive laboratory procedures for detection of nutrients, salinity, oxygen, bacteria and viruses. The Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring operates laboratories with a variety of capabilities for these measurements.
