CHROMIUM
RESEARCH
DRAFT
Potential
Level of Exposure to Jersey City
Residents due to Inhalation of Chromium
VI - between 1985 and 2006 - by
Census Block Groups
This
map is a draft that will ultimately
be used in the study of lung cancer
in Jersey City in relationship to
historical chromium waste exposure.
This version represents a work in
progress. We are investigating ways
to make the map more accessible
and easier to interpret. At the
same time, we are actively seeking
public comment from the residents
of Jersey City about areas that
may have had a high potentially
for chromium exposure to residents
in the past.
Does
the map accurately represent these
areas? Are there areas that, in
the past, may have had a high potential
for chromium exposure that are not
represented on the map? Keep in
mind that we are specifically interested
in historical exposures. Therefore,
the chromium waste sites that are
important for this investigation
may have been excavated or capped.
Even if the site is no longer contaminated
it may be important because of the
exposure caused in the past. Also
keep in mind that areas of new housing
near waste sites may not be appropriate
for consideration because of the
relatively long period between exposure
to chromium and the diagnosis of
cancer.
Once
we receive public comment and input,
we will finalize the map. Once that
occurs, the New Jersey Department
of Health and Senior Services will
combine the information represented
by the map with New Jersey State
Cancer Registry information specific
to Jersey City to investigate whether
historic rates of lung cancer are
associated with residence near a
chromium waste site at the time
the cancer was diagnosed.
