20TH ANNUAL NJ WATERFOWL STAMP & PRINT -- FIRST IN A NEW RETRIEVER PUPPY SERIES

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife proudly presents the 20th Anniversary Edition Retriever Puppy Series; the first collectible series of state duck stamp prints depicting waterfowl and various breeds of retriever puppies. Painted by artist James Killen, the artwork features a black lab puppy with a pintail decoy carved by New Jersey carver Clarence Fennimore.

Artist James Killen has won numerous national and international awards, including more than 16 state duck stamp honors. Recently, Ducks Unlimited selected him "International Artist of the Year" for 2003-2004 (the first artist to receive this prestigious award three times). The distinctive style and quality of Killen's artwork has generated millions of dollars for numerous conservation groups including Ducks Unlimited International, the National Wild Turkey Federation and Pheasants Forever. Various gift items, home furnishings and apparel feature his work, as well as a book entitled "The Art of Jim Killen" released in 2000.

Carver Clarence Fennimore began his hobby in the late 1980s, carving in the Barnegat Bay style. Soon after, he changed to the Delaware River style and now specializes in traditional hollow cedar decoys painted in oils that are as beautiful as they are functional. He is an active member of the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Association and was chosen "Carver of the Year" at their annual 2002 show. Fennimore is a volunteer carver at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum and in the summer of 2001, was the featured contemporary carver.

The DEP's Waterfowl Stamp Program began in 1984 with an act of the State Legislature that requires waterfowl hunters aged 16 and older to buy state waterfowl stamps. The division currently administers the program for the purpose of purchasing wetlands for waterfowl habitat. To date, proceeds from the sale of New Jersey's duck stamps and prints have raised more than $3.9 million to acquire wetlands for waterfowl habitat and public use. More than 13,000 acres of waterfowl habitat have been purchased or donated.

Limited edition, signed and numbered prints of the 20th anniversary waterfowl stamp may now be purchased directly from the division.
