More Than 50,000 Trout To Be Stocked in October

September 27, 2004

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will stock more than 50,000 trout in the state’s major trout waters from October 5-21. The Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County will distribute the fish, which are in excellent condition.

The fall trout-stocking program is one of the most popular offered by the Division of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers enjoy the additional fish provided by the Division as well as the opportunity to fish the waters of New Jersey during one of the most beautiful times of year. Cooler temperatures and reduced fishing pressure makes for a relaxed fishing experience. The changing of fall foliage colors adds even more enjoyment to being outdoors this time of year.

Standard production trout (approximately 9–11 inches in length and weighing up to a ˝-pound each) will be stocked during the fall season. The distribution of broodstock will depend on the timing and success of the rainbow trout spawning operation. These fish will not be stocked until the hatchery has met its annual rainbow trout egg requirements. Pending the availability of these fish, South Jersey impoundments will receive excess breeders in Week 2. The remainder of the allotment will be stocked Week 3 in North Jersey along with the surplus production fish*.

The fall trout-stocking schedule can be viewed at www.njfishandwildlife.com/flstk.htm.

* Quantities of surplus are not determined until actual stocking of these fish.

Stocking dates may change and are subject to prevailing weather and water conditions.

For the most updated information regarding fall trout stocking conditions, please check the above link or call the Division’s Trout Stocking Hotline at 609-633-6765. The hotline is operational 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
