Introduction to Shooting Sports Program Sept. 25 in Union County

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protectionís Division of Fish and Wildlife, in cooperation with the Union County Federation of Sportsmenís Clubs Inc., the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Cranford Rod and Gun Club, will host a free Introduction to Shooting Sports Program Saturday, September 25. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Union County Trap and Skeet Range in Cranford. Registration is not required.

Under the guidance of Division hunter education instructors, beginning shooters aged 10 and older will receive special instruction in firearm safety and can engage in a 5-shot activated clay target shoot. There will also be air rifle and archery ranges for youngsters. Children between the ages of 10 and 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants may bring their own shotguns, however, shotguns, shells and clay targets will be provided by the Divisionís Hunter Education Program. Those who bring their own shotguns must keep them unloaded and cased until brought to the firing line.

This event is the perfect opportunity to learn the basics of safe shotgun shooting with trained Division coaches experienced in teaching completely new shooters. The objective is to introduce newcomers to the sport in a non-threatening, fun and safe atmosphere.

The range is located on Kenilworth Boulevard, Exit 138 off the Garden State Parkway.
