The 17th annual Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament will be held on Sunday, October 5 at Island Beach State Park. This popular event draws nearly 1000 participants every year.

Surf fishing is a great family activity and the Governor's annual tournament offers the perfect opportunity for youngsters and adults to learn more about this relaxing and enjoyable sport. Taking part in the tournament also helps to build a stronger appreciation of our marine resources and for marine resource conservation.

Funds generated through the tournament are used for a myriad of programs including: improving access to public fishing areas, construction of access ramps for disabled anglers, marine education and surf fishing instruction programs, educational displays for Island Beach State Park’s interpretive center and the purchase of specialized wheelchairs that provide beach access for disabled and elderly anglers.

The individual who catches the overall largest fish wins the "Governor's Trophy," and has his/her name engraved on the Governor's Cup, which is permanently displayed at the park. Fishing equipment is awarded to winners who catch the largest fish in each species category. Length of the fish determines the winner, not weight.

Anglers wishing to participate in the tournament are reminded to register now: doing so entitles you to save on the adult registration fee, be eligible for special prizes and avoid delays when entering the park. The early entry incentive ends September 14. After this date, anglers will be required to register at the tournament.

The tournament is sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife and Division of Parks and Forestry, the New Jersey Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association.
