The New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife reminds hunters that the use of bait for deer hunting will be permitted during the 1998-99 deer season in all counties except Bergen, Essex and Hudson. The experimental law was passed at the request of the agricultural community to increase deer harvest and better control local deer populations.
The regulation will last for one deer season only, after which its effectiveness will be evaluated. Deer hunters may hunt from blinds, elevated stands or other structures and may be any distance from a baited area.
Hunters should note that some areas, including national wildlife refuges, would continue to prohibit the use of bait while deer hunting. Individuals should check with landowners or the administrative agency for the land they hunt regarding the use of bait.
