All New Jersey students in grades 1 through 8 are invited to submit essays in the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife's 14th annual Fishing Essay Contest. The theme of this year's essay is "My Funniest Fishing Story." A fictional account may be submitted.

"Our annual essay contest is a unique opportunity for youngsters to express their excitement and enthusiasm about fishing," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "We are always impressed by the quality of the essays we receive and the variety of experiences related. It is rewarding to see students share these experiences with teachers, classmates and families. As in the past, I look forward to fishing with the winners on opening day."

There will be first, second and third place winners in each of the following four categories: Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Essays are limited to 200 words and will be judged according to originality, style, expression of ideas and proper use of English grammar.

Each winner will receive an engraved plaque as well as an assortment of fishing equipment. In addition, each winner will be invited to the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center in Warren County for a special VIP tour and awards ceremony. Winners will also have a chance to fish at Pequest's Fishing Education Pond with Division Director Bob McDowell on the opening day of trout season, Saturday, April 8, 2000.

Entries must be postmarked by Friday, February 18th. Entries must include the entrant's name, address, telephone number, grade and school name. Essays become the property of the Division and will not be returned.
