Entering the Outstanding White-tailed Deer Program

The Outstanding Deer Program annually presents awards for each season's outstanding deer. However, any deer legally harvested in New Jersey which meets the minimum qualifications can be entered for inclusion on the All-time Outstanding Deer List in one or more of several categories, including:
135 Pound Doe Club - Archery, Shotgun, Muzzleloader and Crossbow
200 Pound Club - Archery, Shotgun, Muzzleloader and Crossbow
Typical - Archery (also Velvet), Shotgun, Muzzleloader and Crossbow (also Velvet)
Non-typical - Archery (also Velvet), Shotgun, Muzzleloader and Crossbow (also Velvet)
Entries can be submitted using the forms below.

General Rules:

1. No entry fee. Properly licensed hunters, including non-residents, are eligible.

2. Deer must be taken in accordance with the laws and regulations of the State of New Jersey.

3. Applications for the annual competition must include a photo of the hunter with the deer and be received by November 1 for the previous year's hunting season. No exceptions.

4. All aspects of the Boone and Crockett Club's official scoring system are used for this program. A 60-day drying period (at normal room temperature with all flesh and membranes removed) is required before scoring. Split or repaired skulls and shed antlers are not eligible. Hunters should first perform a "rough" score measurement to determine if the deer meets the minimum score (see below) prior to scheduling with an official measurer.

5. Score forms (with instructions) are available for these white-tailed deer categories: Typical, Non-typical, Velvet, 200 Pound Buck and 135 Pound Doe separately for each sporting arm legally used to hunt deer in New Jersey. To be entered in the non-typical category, deer must have at least one inch of non-typical antler material. Qualified bucks may be entered in either the Antlered Division, the Weight Division or both. Request an information packet by sending a self-addressed stamped (two ounces), business sized envelope to: NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, Outstanding Deer Program, MC 501-03, P.O. Box 420, Trenton, NJ 08625-0420. Or print the on-line versions.

6. Antlers must be scored by an official "Boone and Crockett Club or Pope & Young Club measurer. A list of official measurers is included in the information packet, or visit our Web site to locate the nearest measurer for an appointment. It is easiest to transport your deer if the rack is measured before having it mounted. Don't wait!

7. Antlered Division - Entry requirements: Send a clear photograph of the deer with the hunter plus the completed score form (including possession seal or confirmation number and hunter's Conservation ID number) signed by an official measurer (pdf, 14kb). All photographs become the property of New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, for any use, and will not be returned. Mark the back of the photo with the hunter's name and address.

8. Weight Division - Entry requirements, 200 Pound Buck: Send a clear photograph of both deer and hunter, the completed 200 Pound Buck entry form signed by the weighmaster, plus the weight slip from the facility operating the certified scale showing the deer's field-dressed weight (all organs removed). Deer entered in the 200 Pound Buck category must be weighed on a certified scale and must be witnessed by both the weighmaster and another person other than the applicant. The weighmaster is the person who routinely operates the certified scale. Fish and Wildlife reserves the right to question any witness and examine the scale used for the certified weight. Do not use a truck scale; their large increments may not show deer's true weight. Contact our office at 609-633-7598 for assistance locating a certified scale or see the list of certified scales below. All photographs become the property of New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, for any use, and will not be returned. Mark the back of the photo with the hunter's name, address and phone.

9. Weight Division - Entry requirements, 135 Pound Doe: Send a clear photograph of both deer and hunter, the completed 135 Pound Doe entry form. Female deer (does) entered in this category do not require a certified scale but one may be used. Deer must be weighed at a Fish and Wildlife regional field offices with a deer biologist who must witness and record the weight on your entry form or on state letterhead to serve as a weight slip. If outside of business hours or a deer biologist is not available, use a certified scale as for 200 pound buck entries detailed above.
