Outstanding Gobbler Award Program
The Outstanding Gobbler Award Program was designed to recognize one of the greatest success
stories in wildlife management - the restoration of the wild turkey to New Jersey. The objective of this program was to acknowledge the quality of the Division of Fish and Wildlife's wild turkey management efforts and the ability of the sportsmen and women who successfully hunt for them. Each year there were winners selected in both typical and non-typical categories.
The program was administered by the New Jersey Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation which has been an active partner in the restoration and management of the wild turkey.
As of 2008 the program has been suspended.
A turkey was eligible for the award if it met the score requirement:
Birds must have been weighed on a certified scale before or after gutting. Submitters needed to obtain a receipt with the date, and the store/location and name of person who weighed the bird recorded.
60 - Typical
80 - Non-typical (multiple beards or spurs)
weight + 2(beard length) + 10(combined spur lengths)
