Trout in the Classroom - Pompeston Creek Cleanup

The following was provided by the Cinnaminson High School Trout in the Classroom program.

A Stream Cleanup in the Pompeston tidal marsh behind Cinnaminson High School took place on April 30, 2008. With help from Cinnaminson High School students, under the direction of Beth Bresnahan, Deb Lord, and science teacher Craig Angelini, several classes came out and worked all day.

Clean up crew The group pulled the following from the creek, marsh, and adjacent woods: 5 tires, 3 shopping carts, a couch, school chairs, barrels, a large cooler, toys, a floating dock, a gas can, an old dishwasher, fencing, buckets, many sports balls, lumber, and 47 large contractor bags of trash (lots of Styrofoam).

Everyone was amazed and thoroughly disgusted with what was found after working ncredibly hard all day. The reward (besides pizza) was seeing lots of wildlife, including a bald eagle, hawks, ducks, many songbirds, woodpeckers and insects. The group also observed three baby great horned owls in their nest, courtesy of Jill Croft.

What a great job the students and Mr. Angelini did, and everyone is so grateful! The clean up was in the section of Pompeston Creek that has been given Category One protection (300 foot buffers) because of threatened species. Perhaps everyone who lives upstream can work harder to keep trash and debris out of the creek and storm sewers. Let's give this spectacular resource a chance!
