PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The bureau is responsible for the management and protection of the state’s freshwater aquatic resources, as well as, enhancing recreational fishing opportunities. In cooperation with the Fish and Game Council, the bureau develops fishing regulations for the state’s freshwater resources. For local municipalities, the bureau will sample lakes and ponds open to the general public, for fishing and the development of management recommendations. In addition, the bureau will also sample streams for fish population data and stream classification. The bureau stocks fish for recreational opportunities, including the Children’s Fishing Derby Program. Furthermore the bureau provides technical assistance on lake and stream restoration projects including riparian restoration. In cooperation with the New Jersey Mosquito Control Program, the bureau provides gambusia (and other mosquito larvae eating fish) to County Mosquito Control Programs. These services are provided free of charge, and are supported by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses.

PERMITTING RESPONSIBILITIES:
The bureau issues licenses for water lowering, fish stocking, including the introduction of grass carp for weed control purposes, and special uses. In addition, the bureau reviews and issues various commercial harvest permits for baitfish, snapping turtles, frogs and commercial gill nets. The bureau also reviews Stream Encroachment and Freshwater Wetland Applications, as requested by department’s Land Use Regulation Program.
