DEP Encourages the Public to Take to the Trails this Weekend:
Celebrate National Trails Day in New Jersey

(04/64) TRENTON - The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) kicks-off National Trails Day on Saturday with events and activities planned throughout the weekend in state parks, forests and other sites throughout the state.

"Trails in New Jersey provide an abundance of opportunities. You can enjoy the scenic panorama of flowers and trees, you can look for and identify wildlife, you can connect with our historic past and you can hike for better health," said DEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell. "Whether you live in the city, suburbs, or rural areas there is probably a trail or pathway close to you."

This year the national theme is "Trails and Health-A Natural Connection." Campbell encourages families and outdoor enthusiasts to access more than 1,000 miles of marked or mapped trails and approximately 500 miles of canoeable waterways statewide.

In addition to the annual celebration, Trails Day develops a better understanding of the importance of trails and what it takes to establish, preserve and maintain them throughout the year.

National Trails Day was first celebrated in 1993 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the National Trails System Act. It is now an annual event recognizing and promoting the many benefits of trails.

A complete list of National Trails Day events is available at www.nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/
