LIBERTY STATE PARK HOSTS SUPER BOWL KICKOFF SPECTACULAR WITH
CONCERT AND FIREWORKS TONIGHT
“Super Bowl Kickoff Spectacular’’ to Feature Performances by Daughtry, the Goo Goo Dolls
and The Fray, plus Macy’s Fireworks along the Hudson River

(14/P6) JERSEY CITY – New Jersey will host the official Super Bowl XLVIII Kickoff Event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City tonight when the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee and Macy’s team up to produce the “Super Bowl Kickoff Spectacular Starring Macy’s Fireworks,” a free, ticketed event featuring performances by Daughtry, the Goo Goo Dolls and The Fray in an outdoor event that will serve as the official launch to the week-long sports celebration.

The concert event will run from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., ending with a big bang as Macy’s Fireworks will set the sky ablaze in a 13-minute choreographed show that will include a soundtrack featuring songs from Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. The fireworks spectacle will be fired from two barges on the Hudson River flanking the Statue of Liberty, with multi-level explosions reaching heights of 1,000 feet, making the spectacle visible to spectators in the surrounding area.

The event will be broadcast live by FOX Sports 1 from 8-9 p.m. and repeated at 2 a.m. Tuesday

Limited quantities of free general admission tickets for the Super Bowl kickoff sold out quickly, with a limited number of VIP tickets available at www.SBKickoffSpectacular.com. Tickets are required to access the concert space and prime viewing location for Macy’s Fireworks at Liberty State Park, which was battered just 15 months ago by Superstorm Sandy.

“We’ve been working especially hard since Sandy to repair and fully reopen this treasured park, which is the most visited state park in New Jersey,’’ said New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin. “We know how important this park is to state residents and to the nation, as the gateway to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We gladly welcome concert-goers, Super Bowl fans and the national television audience to our beautiful park with its panoramic views of the New York skyline.’’

For fans traveling by car, free limited parking will be available (an advance parking pass is required and available on the website). Event organizers suggest public transportation and request that spectators refrain from bringing large bags, backpacks, strollers, liquids, or coolers. All bags are subject to search.

Liberty State Park will remain open during this event. Areas outside of the concert section will be available to the public, as usual. But there will be no parking available. Local residents who want to view the fireworks should walk or bike to the park.

“The Super Bowl experience in New Jersey and New York promises to be unlike any other, and this event will serve as an exciting, welcoming start to the week,” said Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson, Co-Chairman of the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee.

“We are excited to hold this event for our region’s fans, allowing them to be a part of the celebratory fanfare that will drive momentum for the continuation of the week as we welcome the world to New Jersey and New York,” said Jonathan Tisch, Co-Chairman of the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee.

Liberty State Park consists of 1,200 acres, with wildlife habitats, open water, fields, nature trails, bike paths, picnic areas and the two-mile Hudson River walkway, known as Liberty Walk. It is the most visited state park with 5.2 million visitors last year.

For the past year, Liberty staff and teams of state parks employees have made repairs and cleared away vast amounts of debris caused by Superstorm Sandy, which brought a huge tidal flow that engulfed the state’s busiest park.

Work has recently begun on exterior repairs to the iconic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Building, which was the launch point into America for millions of immigrants, and is scheduled to reopen by September of 2014. Work is also underway to repair the damaged ferry slip in front of the Terminal Building.
