CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION TEAMS UP WITH TRENTON TO HOST URBAN YOUTH FISHING DERBY ON MAY 31
FISHING COMPETITION WILL KICK OFF DAY’S ACTIVITIES

(14/P45) TRENTON – A fishing competition for youngsters ages 6 to 12 will kick off a Youth Fishing Derby at Trenton’s Stacy Park co-sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and City of Trenton on May 31. Youth between the ages of 6 and12 are invited to pre-register for the derby.

The first 100 registrants for the competition will be able to compete for trophies for catching the largest fish, the smallest fish and other categories. Additional events for those who do not pre-register for the competition, including opportunities to cast for fish with fishing gear to be provided, will be part of the rest of the day’s events.

As sponsors of the Youth Fishing Derby, the DEP and the City of Trenton will engage city youth in a fun fishing competition, educate participants about recreational fishing and water resources, and encourage family play and enjoyment in a natural outdoor setting.

All participants will receive a certificate that recognizes participation in the derby. Though the “catch and release” approach will be utilized, ice and plastic bags will be on hand if the kids desire to take home a legally sized catch. Bass and bluegill are among species of fish in the lake.

The Youth Fishing Derby will be held at Stacy Park in Trenton (located off Riverside Drive and accessible from Lee Road just off Route 29) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is a rain or shine event. Participants are encouraged to bring raingear if the weather is questionable. They must also supply their own protective eyewear (sunglasses, glasses or goggles), and should bring water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat.

Parents and guardians are required to attend and must participate in the derby with the kids. They may fish with their children once the derby is finished. Parents and guardians must have a current fishing license.

The derby will feature instruction about fishing basics and safety, hands-on educational stations about watersheds, water pollution, fish and aquatic habitats, and will include free lunchtime food and drinks for the kids. Event supporters include Fred and Pete’s Delicatessen in Hamilton Township, and Sports World in Trenton.
