DEP COMMISSIONER BRADLEY CAMPBELL ISSUES DROUGHT ORDER AMENDMENT
Statewide Water Emergency Calls for Water Transfer

TRENTON 04/09 -- The Department of Environmental Protection today issued an Administrative Order outlining further initiatives to address the serious drought situation throughout the state.

"At this time, additional actions are necessary to maintain reservoir levels in the northeast, the hardest hit drought region in New Jersey," said Bradley M. Campbell, Commissioner. "We do need to make sure that water companies are taking all possible measures to address water loss."

The order requires:

  • the New Jersey American Water Company to increase (up to the maximum) the amount of water taken from the Elizabethtown Water Company.

  • the development of a plan to modify the current water supply infrastructure associated with the North Jersey Water Supply Commission and the Newark Department of Water and Sewer to maximize the transfer of water to the northeast drought region.

  • by June 1, 2002, water companies must supply to the drought coordinator the amount of unaccounted for water with short and long term plans to reduce that amount.
