dep photo: EAP Fire TruckIn May 2002, the Bureau of Dam Safety & Flood Control within the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection launched a Dam Safety Awareness Program for Emergency Managers in New Jersey. The purpose of the program was to increase overall knowledge of emergency response to dam failures in the state. Three seminars were held throughout the state over a six-month period. Topics included a case study of historic dam failures, discussion regarding past emergency responses to dam failures within New Jersey and future emergency action planning for dams.

The Bureau of Dam Safety & Flood Control is continuing the outreach program to include both local emergency management agencies and large dam owners.
