Girl Scouts

The Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair offers an opportunity for Girl Scouts to earn patches. It is up to the Scout to work with her parent, leader or group chaparone to ensure the requirements are met.

Family Living Skills (Juniors)

5          Speak with people at the military encampments and learn how chores have changed. 

United We Stand (Juniors)

8          Visit Monmouth Battlefield State Park: Monmouth Battlefield State Park is listed on the
            National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

9          Play games or help with chores from the 18th century. 


American Patriot Interest Award (Cadettes)

Skill Builders

           National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places

3         Learn about Lenape cooking, leisure time activities and hunting by visiting James Wade,  
         Heart to Hearth Cookery and Waterloo Village Historic Site.


Career Exploration

1          Learn about jobs that were available in the 1700s and 1800s. Meet a Blacksmith, meet
            poet Walt Whitman* and woodworkers.  Meet actors who portray independent strong
            women including and Molly Pitcher, Clara Barton and engineer Emily Roebling.

3          Government employers are well represented at the Fair: see genealogists from the State
            Archive, meet with a variety of people who work in the states historic sites and parks.

Wave the Flag Try-its (Brownies)

5          Participate in a program on Native American Indians from central New Jersey and learn
            about who lived here in the past.  

Computer Smarts Try-its (Brownies)

6         The Genealogical Society of NJ & the NJ State Archives use computers and the internet
           in genealogical research.


Life in Colonial Times (Brownies)

2.       Learn about Colonial cooking by watching a demonstration 18th century Pit fire cooking at history Rockingham’s exhibit.  

3.       History comes alive at the Spirit of the Jerseys Fair. Actors portray famous colonists such as General George Washington, Ben Franklin and Mary Hays McCauley aka “Molly Pitcher”. You can observe a variety of colonial style dress from our many presenters and volunteers located in the 18th century section of the Fair.

8        Play with 18th century style toys. Many games from the colonial era were still played in the 19th century. Our 18th/19th century game area includes some of these old favorites like the hoop and stick or graces.

Junior Colonist (Juniors)

3.       Watch wool being spun on a wheel or try your hand at using a drop spindle.

5        See a blacksmith in action near the Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum exhibit.
