The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (Department) has been receiving comments and concerns expressed on the construction work underway by Tennessee Gas Co., LLC (TG) on its northeast upgrade project (NEUP).  Portions of the project are within High Point and Ringwood State Parks as well as on other state lands and areas within Sussex, Passaic and Bergen counties.  During the construction period there will be heightened noise level and transporting of heavy equipment to conduct the work.  Any land and/or wildlife disturbance during this period is being carefully monitored by the Department to ensure that TG is following all permit conditions and mitigation measures are fully implemented.  Compliance monitors on site include individuals trained in endangered species identification and relocation.  Additionally, mitigation measures include all areas disturbed must be restored after construction ends.  For more details about the project, please visit the TG website at.

Spruce Run Recreation Area

Due to extremely low reservoir levels, the swimming area at Spruce Run Recreation Area will be closed effective on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. This closure will remain in effect until authorities determine that there is a sufficient water level for this activity. Registered campers with a valid permit are welcome to utilize the swimming area at nearby Round Valley Recreation Area.  Please visit our website for a complete listing of other State park swimming areas and their hours of operation.

Attention Boaters:  Due to the ongoing release of water from Spruce Run Reservoir to meet the demands of the New Jersey Water Supply Authority customer needs, the water level has fallen below the boat launch docks.  Boaters may experience some difficulty in launching their boats.

Voorhees State Park

Camping reservations and other information regarding Voorhees State Park can be obtained by contacting Spruce Run Recreation Area at (908) 638-8572.

Wharton State Forest

Division C Forest Fire Service personnel, in conjunction with Wharton State Forest maintenance staff, are working to repair several high priority dirt roads in the Atsion section of the Forest.

In order to safely repair these dirt roads through wet areas, portions of Stokes Road (east of Hampton Road) and Burnt Mill Road are considered closed to public traffic beginning today, August 9, 2016.  We anticipate the closures for road maintenance activities to be in effect for approximately two weeks.

In addition, road grading maintenance is happening on a number of roads which were rebuilt in the past years (Carranza, Tuckerton, High Crossing).  While these roads are not closed to traffic, motorists should exercise caution if they encounter a road grader, slow down and give the road crew space to operate safely.

Starting April 4, Washington Turnpike in Wharton State Forest will be intermittently closed for three months. State Forest Service and Forest Fire Service will be working in this area to create a firebreak and fuelbreak that will help keep surrounding communities safe from wildfire. Learn more
