Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station

The Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station is a single unit, boiling water reactor located in Lacey Township, Ocean County, near Barnegat Bay. The plant is owned by Jersey Central Power and Light Company and is operated by General Public Utilities Nuclear.

It is located on 1,316 acres and is traversed by U.S. Highway Route 9. Geographically, the plant is situated in the Outer Coastal Plain near the Pinelands National Reserve. The reserve is characterized by a fragile ecosystem and a large untapped ground water reserve. In addition, there are extensive freshwater and saltwater marshes. Barnegat Bay Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean are within 10 miles of the plant.

Land use near the plant consists of commercial, residential, and recreational properties. Island Beach State Park and adjacent shore areas contribute to a large seasonal increase to the local population. The largest concentrations of residents are to the north and the northeast (retirement communities). The closest residents are 0.5 miles northeast of the plant.
