2013 Radon Poster Contest Winners

Winners were announced for the New Jersey Radon Poster Contest. Children ages 9-14 enrolled in a public, private, or home school, or through a sponsoring club (such as art, computer, science club, scouting organization or 4-H club) were eligible. The goal was to raise awareness about the harmful effects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas and to increase the number of homes tested for radon. Children were asked to submit posters with one of the following radon topics depicted in the artwork:

  • What is radon?
  • Where does radon come from?
  • How does radon get into our homes?
  • Radon can cause lung cancer.
  • Test your home for radon.

A total of 353 New Jersey youths participated, and first, second, and third place winners were selected. Recognition was also given to the school with the most entries. Due to the outstanding quality of the entries, twenty-one honorable mention winners were also selected.

Tommy, a student at Readington Middle School in Whitehouse Station, won first place. Second place winner was Isaac from Anna C. Scott School in Leonia, and third place winner was Lizette, from Edward W. Kilpatrick Elementary School in Paterson. The school with the most entries was Waldwick Middle School in Waldwick.

New Jersey winners qualified for entry in the 2013 National Radon Poster Contest sponsored by Kansas State University in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. National winners competed for monetary gift cards and award plaques and reproductions of their posters will be distributed nationally to promote radon awareness. The national winners as well as the first, second, and third place winners for each state can be viewed at www.sosradon.org/poster-contest.
