INTRODUCTION

The Machine Source Section within the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance (Bureau) administers New Jersey's inspection program for all x-ray equipment within the state. There are almost 25,000 x-ray machines registered in New Jersey. It is the responsibility of the owner to register the x-ray equipment and ensure that it complies with all applicable radiation protection regulations persuant to New Jersey Administrative Code (N.J.A.C. 7:28). An official copy of New Jersey radiation protection regulations (N.J.A.C. 7:28) is available from LexisNexis bookstore (Phone: (800) 223-1940). An unofficial copy is available on our website by clicking here.

The owner is also required to have a qualified individual perform a radiation safety survey on each unit. If the x-ray unit is used for medical or dental diagnosis the survey must be submitted to the Bureau within 60 days of installation, relocation, repair or alteration. If the x-ray machine is a particle accelerator, therapeutic, industrial or cabinet type then the radiation safety survey must be performed & submitted prior to use.

Certain installations are required to provide personnel monitoring devices (film badges, finger badges, etc.) to their employees. Basic requirements for personnel monitoring devices are found at N.J.A.C. 7:28-7. Additional requirements for personnel monitoring devices can be found throughout N.J.A.C. 7:28. Please reveiw the appropriate sub-chapters for specific requirements. Click here for a list of companies that provide personnel radiation monitoring devices.
