American Tour de Sol Solar and Electric Car Rally

The DEP, along with the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, the U.S. Department of Energy and auto manufacturers sponsor the American Tour de Sol each year, a road rally for solar and electric cars. In 2000, the rally ran through New Jersey to Washington D.C. In alternate years it runs through New England. The Tour de Sol demonstrates and promotes use of solar/electric, electric hybrid power for cars, trucks and motorcycles. In 2000, fifty vehicles competed in the Tour de Sol. Three were New Jersey entries. New Jersey schools can get involved with the Tour in a couple of ways; each year students in vocational programs help to construct and maintain the New Jersey cars entered into the race, also, students are welcome to view the cars when they tour through New Jersey.

Highlights
  • Tour de Sol participation provides students with ways to apply engineering technology and compete in a real world challenge. High school students demonstrate skills in engineering, technology, project organization and fund raising.

  • The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association has books and videos on how a school can begin a solar/electric car project. Schools have used this innovative project as the core of math, science and English course work.

  • Contact the Division of Energy to learn more about the Tour de Sol logistics and ways students can participate.
