The Envirothon is a day-long and hands-on competition for high school students that tests their knowledge of environmental issues in such areas as forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and soils. Teams compete from high school clubs and classes throughout the state and prepare throughout the year for this competition. The Envirothon is sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts, and other organization and agencies. Staff from the NJDEP help to promote the event, act as judges, and coordinate various activities.
The Envirothon empowers its participants through training, experience, team work and competition in natural resource problem-solving. Throughout the year, students explore natural resource-related topics, including soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife ecology and current environmental issues. In May, the New Jersey Envirothon holds the yearly competition where students take a rigorous test on these subject areas. The winner represents the State of New Jersey in the National competition.
The Envirothon encourages in-depth student learning about natural resources and environmental issues. It also exposes students to careers in natural resources and environmental protection and management.
The New Jersey Envirothon is part of the Canon International Envirothon competition sponsored by Canon U.S.A. and the National Association of Conservation Districts. State winners go on to compete at the national level.
While the international competition is usually held at the end of July or early August, the State competition is usually held on a Saturday in May. Envirothon locations change each year, students are offered overnight camping accomodations and meals for this event are provided.
Students preparing for the forestry section of the competition should visit the Forestry Study Guide page.
