Home study hunter education courses provide hands-on training for participants so that they can become safe and responsible hunters in the field. This free program offers courses on shotgun, bow and arrow, muzzleloading and rifle use, along with trapping, to participants ages 10 years and older. Each year more than 10,000 people successfully complete one or more of these courses.
Mandatory hunter education has reduced the hunting accident rate by 66% over the last 30 years. (From an annual average of more than 60 to less than 20)
Field sessions and testing are conducted at centralized teaching locations throughout the state.
State law mandates participation in these courses for all first-time hunters.
Applications are available at state licensing agents, outdoor sporting goods stores and the Division of Fish and Wildlife offices.
New, inexperienced, experienced and/or potential hunters, ages 10 years and older
