Draft Recommendations on Public Participation in Site Remediation Program

September 15, 2005 (Posted 16 September 2005; minor update 25 June 2007)

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Site Remediation and Waste Management Program initiated a review of public participation regulations and policies in order to improve public access to site remediation information and public involvement in the remediation process.

To conduct this review, SRWM convened an internal Task Force, including the NJDEP Environmental Justice Program, to assess current practices and to identify and make recommendations for improved participation in remediation decision-making.

The Task Force prepared the Final Draft of the Public Participation Task Force Recommendations report (PDF 67 Kb). The report outlines areas requiring regulatory change as well as policy changes to implement. Some policy changes have already been initiated. This report will also be made available online at the Community Relations website www.nj.gov/dep/srp/community.

An informal comment period on this draft begins September 15, 2005 and will conclude October 17, 2005. All comments should be directed to Dr. Judith Shaw of the Office of Community Relations at Judith.Shaw@dep.nj.gov. Comments can be mailed to: Dr. Judith Shaw, NJDEP-SRP, P. O. Box 413, Trenton, New Jersey, 08625-0413.

Once comments have been received and reviewed, the revised recommendations requiring regulatory promulgation will be moved through the rule-making process.
