Acting Commissioner Kobylowski Celebrates Read Across America Day at Shrewsbury Borough School

SHREWSBURY Department of Banking and Insurance Acting Commissioner Ken Kobylowski today read Dr. Seuss’ I Can Read With My Eyes ShutandGreat Day For Up!to the second grade class at Shrewsbury Borough School as part of Read Across America Day.

“I could not have asked for a better audience,” said Acting Commissioner Kobylowski, a Shrewsbury resident. “The students were very attentive and respectful. It was a real pleasure to spend some time with them and emphasize to them the importance of reading.  I thank Superintendent Brent MacConnell and the entire staff at Shrewsbury Borough School for their courtesy and for giving me the opportunity to do this.”

Cheryl Quinn, the school’s librarian, said the importance of reading is emphasized beyond March 2. Reading is stressed and encouraged throughout the year.

“This is not done for just one day. We want children to understand that reading is the basis for everything; it ties into math, science and language arts. The skills carry over so the learning is thematic and deep,” said Quinn.

Read Across America, which was started in 1998, is a nationwide reading celebration that schools hold annually on or near March 2, the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

Across the country, teachers and community leaders engage in a wide variety of activities to emphasize the importance of reading to young students. Read Across America is also sponsored and spearheaded by support from more than 50 national nonprofit and association partners. Schools, libraries, community centers, hospitals and bookstores host local events to celebrate and promote children's reading.
