Christie Administration Helps Raritan Valley Community College Students to Prepare for a Financially Prudent Lifestyle

BRANCHBURG – Department of Banking and Insurance Banking Division Assistant Director of the Office of Consumer Finance Tom Hunt on Dec. 2 gave a financial literacy presentation to college students at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC). He explained the costly pitfalls of not being financially literate in today’s economy to more than seventy-five students who gathered at the Branchburg-based college to hone their credit, bank account and budget establishing skills. He also talked about health insurance options and how to best handle student loans.

“Developing prudent financial habits now will pay real dividends through college and into the complex financial demands of housing, transportation, child-rearing and other exciting life events to come,” said Hunt.

The financial literacy presentation was preceded by a presentation by the student members of the Enactus chapter at RVCC. Enactus is an international non-profit group consisting of student, academic and business leaders who promote entrepreneurial action aimed at creating a more sustainable world.

“RVCC Enactus students have brought financial literacy programs alive here,” said Hunt,  “where so many students balance a job and school, with an everyday need to be smart about money.”

Hunt’s presentation was part of the Department’s ongoing financial literacy program, which was expanded in 2006 with programs for high school students and expanded in 2012 to include programs for senior citizens and college students.
