National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA): The United States Geological Survey's (USGS) NAWQA program was initiated in 1991 to describe the status and trends in the quality of the nation's ground and surface waters. This program is unique in that it integrates surface and groundwater-quality monitoring with the study of aquatic ecosystems. The USGS began the Delaware River Basin (DELR) NAWQA study in 1997.
