Abstract:
The Boys & Girls Club of Trenton & Mercer County is implementing a comprehensive afterschool program through the 21st Century CLC grant at four locations in the city of Trenton to serve 225 4th to 8th grade students.   Three of the program locations are schools, Village Charter, PJ Hill and Columbus.  Students from the Emily Fisher Charter Middle School, Trenton Catholic Academy and Paul Robeson Charter are transported by school bus at school dismissal to the Club’s 212 Centre Street facility.  The program’s curriculum will utilize Boys & Girls Clubs of America evidence and best practice programs, along with programs from collaborators such as Mercer County 4-H, Mercer County Community College, Magical Mother, Minding Your Business, and Passage Theater.  The program model will also support the State of New Jersey’s High School Graduation initiative by providing academic support, building character, teaching life skills, developing mentoring relationships between staff and youth, and developing career aspirations.  The project curriculum will also support the Governor’s Safe Streets Initiative by implementing Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s best practice Delinquency Prevention Initiative.  This program targets truant youth, engages them in interest based programs and a case management team to provide them with support and encouragement.  Collaborators in the Delinquency Prevention Initiative are Mercer Street Friends, which will provide youth counseling, Trenton Police Department, which will provide support services and project Group Leaders, which will provide overall case management and program delivery.
